What to pack for Italy in summer
How I Pack for My Summer Trips Back to Italy
Since I’ve been living in the US, every summer I look forward to going back to Italy with a lighter heart. I love the idea of reconnecting with family, the familiar tastes of home, the traditions that shaped me — and above all, the unique atmosphere of an Italian summer, filled with endless lunches, sunset strolls, and that feeling of belonging that I only truly find there.
Over time, sometimes through trial and error, I’ve learned what I really need to pack and what I can easily leave behind. When I prepare my suitcase, I try to avoid carrying unnecessary weight or items I know I can easily buy once I arrive. I want to travel light but never compromise on comfort and essentials.
I’ve put together my practical tips based on years of experience traveling to the mountains, the sea, and art-filled cities, with the hope of sharing what really works.
City Travel
I’m always happy to visit new cities and experience everything they have to offer. When I visit Italian cities, comfort and respect are my top priorities. I usually pack light, breathable clothes like linen or cotton shirts, along with comfortable sneakers or sandals for lots of walking. A small crossbody bag helps me explore hands-free. To stay cool and connected, I always bring a portable USB fan or a handheld fan, a power bank, sunglasses, and a hat or cap. I also carry hand sanitizer and a face mask, just in case I find myself in crowded places where it might be needed. If you enjoy photography beyond your phone, don’t forget to pack a camera. I also like to have a city map or some brochures handy to help me navigate and discover local spots. Because many churches and museums have dress codes, I never forget to pack a scarf or pashmina to cover my shoulders when needed.
Mountain Trips
When I head to the mountains, I always prepare for changing weather conditions. Trekking shoes with sturdy soles are a must, along with high socks for extra comfort and protection. I carry a lightweight backpack to hold essentials, including a small first aid kit and a power bank to keep my devices charged. I usually bring hiking poles too, but since they can be rented locally, I don’t always pack them. Breathable technical shirts keep me comfortable during the day, and I layer up with a windbreaker, a sweatshirt (a cozy, casual warm layer), or a lightweight fleece jacket—a soft, insulating piece perfect for cooler mountain evenings—and a waterproof jacket in case of rain or wind. Sunscreen and lip balm with SPF are always in my bag to protect my skin. I also carry a reusable water bottle because mountain water tastes amazing and keeps me refreshed. Even in the summer, evenings can get quite cool, so I make sure to have a warm layer handy. Before exploring more remote trails, I always check the route details carefully and save local emergency numbers just in case.
Beach Vacation
When I’m heading to the beach in Italy, I like to keep my packing simple but thoughtful. I always bring a high-quality sunscreen to protect my skin from the strong summer sun. At least one swimsuit is a must, along with a lightweight microfiber towel that dries quickly and takes up little space. A wide-brimmed hat and a good pair of sunglasses are essential to stay cool and shielded from the sun’s rays. I also pack a good book and headphones—perfect for relaxing while listening to music or an audiobook. Comfortable beach slippers complete my beach kit, making it easy to walk on hot sand or rocky shores without hassle.
For evenings, I usually bring a couple of casual but chic outfits to go out for dinner or a walk along the promenade. Light dresses, linen shirts paired with shorts or skirts, and a pair of sandals or espadrilles work perfectly. This way, I’m ready to enjoy the relaxed Italian summer nightlife without overpacking.
Keeping it light helps me enjoy the day and the night without feeling weighed down.
