New Year’s Eve in Italy: traditions and customs
New Year’s Eve, or as we say in Italy, Capodanno or San Silvestro, is one of the most anticipated moments of the year. While Christmas is generally more intimate and family-oriented, New Year’s Eve is the perfect occasion to say goodbye to the past year and welcome the new one with energy, hope, and a joyful spirit.
Everyone celebrates it differently: some prefer to stay home with family, others gather with friends, take a short trip, or join the crowds in the main squares, surrounded by music, fireworks, and toasts. In Italy, there’s no shortage of options, every city, large or small, offers its own atmosphere and special way to welcome the New Year.
I’ve celebrated New Year’s Eve in Italy in just about every way imaginable: with family around a big table, with friends playing games and laughing, in the mountains surrounded by snow in a cozy chalet, in the city among music and fireworks, and even in a nightclub dancing until sunrise.
Each experience was unique, with completely different atmospheres and feelings. And that’s the beauty of Capodanno: there’s no right or wrong way to celebrate it.
It all depends on what you want to experience. Whether you prefer something intimate, adventurous, or lively, Italy truly offers an option for everyone.
Traditions, Food & Good Luck Rituals
The evening of December 31st almost always begins with a long, abundant dinner shared with loved ones, the famous Cenone di San Silvestro. Each region has its own specialties, but there are a few symbolic dishes that appear on many Italian tables.
Lentils: they’re a must! Lentils symbolize prosperity and wealth. Tradition says that eating plenty of them at midnight will bring good fortune and financial success in the coming year.
Cotechino or Zampone: typical of Northern Italy, these rich pork dishes are usually served with lentils. Pork represents abundance, a good omen for the year ahead.
Throughout the evening, people chat, laugh, play cards or board games, and wait together for the countdown.
Italy’s New Year traditions are full of rituals meant to bring luck:
Wearing something red to attract love and good fortune.
Toasting at midnight with Spumante or Prosecco to welcome the new year with joy.
Eating 12 grapes at midnight, one for each month of the year, symbolizing prosperity and balance.
As midnight approaches, everyone counts down together, glasses ready. Fireworks light up the sky across Italy, a dazzling explosion of colors that makes the night feel truly magical.
Where to Celebrate & How to Start the New Year
Italy offers countless destinations for a memorable New Year’s Eve celebration.
Here are some of the most enchanting:
The Dolomites / Mountain Resorts: the most magical and atmospheric choice: cozy chalets surrounded by snow, scenic mountain huts, gourmet dinners at high altitude, and fireworks illuminating the peaks. Perfect for those dreaming of an intimate celebration embraced by the quiet of the mountains and the warmth of a fireplace.
Venice: romantic and cinematic, with canals reflecting festive lights. Watching fireworks over the water is unforgettable, especially from a boat or along the Riva degli Schiavoni.
Milan & Rome: Italy’s great cities offer the perfect mix of concerts, events, and parties. Milan is modern and vibrant, ideal for those seeking exclusive nightlife; Rome is more scenic, with fireworks over its iconic monuments for a timeless celebration.
Naples: famous for its fiery, exuberant celebrations. The sky fills with color and noise, an unforgettable experience for those who love intense emotions.
Across the country, piazzas fill with concerts, DJs, and open-air shows. Even though it’s winter, the collective energy warms everything up. Bars and clubs host themed nights and dance parties for those who want to party until dawn.
January 1st, by contrast, is quiet, a day of rest, late breakfasts, and cozy family lunches. Most museums and attractions remain closed or operate with limited hours, as the country enjoys a slower rhythm, the perfect moment to relax and gently step into the new year.
